This traditional Maori jade carving reflects the intertwined serpentine bodies and bird head figures of two Manaia, or Guardian Spirits. Crafted with a series of 3 or 5 drilled holes connected with grooves produced through rubbing with specially shaped abrasive stones, the "Pekapeka" is an iconic representation of Maori culture.
