The "Pekapeka" is an ancient form depicting the entwined serpentine bodies and the classic bird head figures of two Manaia or Guardian Spirits. It is a very Traditional Maori Jade Carving, created with a series of 3 or 5 drilled holes connected with grooves achieved by rubbing with specially shaped abrasive stones.
Jade (nephrite) was regarded as the most precious stone in ancient China, and it symbolised purity and moral integrity. Prized for its durability and magical qualities, the stone was laboriously carved and polished into all manner of objects from jewellery to desk ornaments.
